From the Associated Press:

Mel Gibson's ``Passion'' has risen to the top of the box office. ``The Passion of the Christ'' has taken in 117-point-five (m) million dollars since its debut five days ago on Ash Wednesday.

The bloody chronicle of Christ's crucifixion has the seventh-best three-day opening ever. It's behind such blockbusters as ``Spider Man,'' ``The Matrix'' franchise and the first two ``Harry Potter'' movies.

Gibson put up the movie's 25 (m) million-dollar budget and will reap most of the returns. Hollywood studios passed on the movie, so Gibson went through independent distributor Newmarket Films to get it on screen for a cut of the profits.

It took in more money than the rest of the top 12 movies combined, with other new movies making barely a ripple. The Ashley Judd crime thriller ``Twisted'' debuted at number three, with nine-point-one (m) million. ``Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights'' a prequel to the 1980's hit, opened in fifth place with five-point-nine (m) million. The horror spoof ``Broken Lizard's Club Dread'' premiered at number ten, with three (m) million.

So... the next question... how long will the #1 rating last? How quickly will “Passion”'s numbers drop?

I think it will drop rather quickly.   I thought it was an excellent, almost a lifechanging movie and that everyone should see it.     I agree with those who say it's popularity will inevitably die out rather quickly because it was popular due to the controversial nature of the film and not the message of the script.

I'm curious... Do you think it's a great film because of the message or is it the merits of filmmaking, or maybe both? This is why I ask, I'm not a Christian, I do not believe in the word of the Bible... So if seeing the movie would simply serve to "strengthen" my faith in Christ, it would be a waste of my time.

Luna,

I thought it was a good film.   I enjoyed it but I am a christian.
Did you watch Braveheart?

The entire movie, Passion of the Christ is analogous to the last 15 minutes of Braveheart.   I don't worship William Wallace nor had I ever heard of him before that movie.   The details and mannerisms of his final sacrifice stregthened the passion in his cause and made for a good story.   That is how this is, in my opinion.

That being said, movies do not alter my consciousness, belief system or enhance my life in any meaningful way.  In the end, I'm $25 poorer, 2 hours closer to death and no more or less a Christian than when I went into the packed Rave theater on Friday night.

I will say this, some people walked out of the theather about 1/2 way through the film.   To them, the movie's entertainment value wasn't balanced by the gore and brutality inflicted on the screen.   I have a pretty strong stomach but some of the scenes were a bit much for me.

Luna, I spoke last night with one of my neighbors who had just seen the film.  She is what I would call a Christian/Free Thinker.  Some might find that description a contradiction in terms, but it works for me.  I'm pretty much that way myself.

Anyway, she had some outstanding thoughts on the film and I'll do my best to mention them as she did.

Although she didn't go to the film thinking that it would change her life, she hoped to gain some new insights into her faith so I would say she attended with a very open mind.  The first thing she said was that it was possibly one of the most violent films she's ever seen...and she sees a LOT of movies.  She kept thinking during the movie that the way folks like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are so rabid about Hollywood movies and so vocal in condemning films like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and other such violent and bloody depictions, that they should absolutely be squirming uncontrollably by what's presented in this movie.

Of course if you said that to them, they'd probably argue that it's completely different because it actually happened.  That doesn't really fly though because other movies that depict true stories (she mentioned Saving Private Ryan for instance) actually happened too - and those things happened to people who have actually told the story that is recreated.  The Bible - though accurate by the beliefs of many - is still something that cannot be supported by actual facts that could be presented to a film maker by people who lived it.    In other words, this film - though based on what many people believe is historically true - is simply a movie interpreted by a film maker.

She thought that the film actually did a disserve to Christians by not continuing the story further.  Although it may have been a fairly accurate depiction of the last hours of Jesus, what makes Christians hopeful and faithful is what happened afterwards when Jesus returned and instead of the film giving us the resurrection which is the most impressive part of the gospel, it just...didn't.  The film, to her, was far too lengthy and gore-filled (boring in parts, she said) with almost no uplifting parts to redeem itself.  Many movies have failed by being 100% bleak and more should have been included to develop the characters more humanely and with more joy.

Although I've been looking forward to the movie and still plan to go, I'm afraid that based on what I've heard so far, it may not match my expectations.  We'll see.  It is after all, just a movie.
