When I look around town and in the news, all I see is evidence of companies going out of business, not new growth..    Does/Has anyone heard of any new perspective mass employers in our area?

Don't be so gloom and doom.  The economy's picking up, jobs will follow.   Stock market, then jobs.

I think you are correct - good jobs are scarce.  If you want to work with fast food or retail, there are numerous opportunities.   Good jobs - there are few and I don't see it getting better.

the stimulating burger flipping industry doesn't sound very appealing.   i would like jobs like a good car manufacturer or anything but walmart.
