As some of you may or may not know- I'm quitting my fulltime job at Standard Furniture (http://www.standard-furniture.com) to take a position wth Plugit (http://www.plugit.com) or (http://www.efileshare.com).

Through my quitting experience, I've developed some office-related Pet Peeves I wanted to share.

First and foremost - Pettiness.
The entire IT staff of Standard worked all memorial day weekend and through the holiday on a major IT project that we had all been involved with.     Shortly thereafter, I took a day off to recoup from the  Holiday weekend that  I worked 38 hours in before Tuesday.   Most companies, in situations like that - will let an employee float that Holiday to another day.  I like the principle behind that - an employee is flexible with their holidays and the employer is flexible floating that holiday...

When discussing the eventuality of my exit with Payroll, I'm informed that day was a vacation day and docked that from my accrued vacation time.

Vacation accrual, also bugs the crap out of me.    So, you are promised X number of hours of vacation a year and if you don't use it in the year, it's gone - but if you leave before    December 31st, you only receive a portion of X.  (Hey, at   least I'm respectful enough to not disclose the number of vacation hours or salary info - I'm a good little boy, aren't I?)

The exuberantly cool IT Director said he would look into that situation with payroll but I wonder how many people have left the company, been screwed on their vacation and not had the clarity of mind to realize it.

Anyway..I say all this to say, all the more reason to be excited about the new position.

First, congratulations on your new job, anomaly!  I hope you'll love it and that they'll value you as you deserve to be appreciated.

I absolutely do not understand how Standard can pull that crap about your vacation/holiday time.  WTH?  You're right to define that behavior as “Pettiness”.  Good grief, to penalize an employee for something so minor that it means virtually NOTHING to the company is ridiculous.  Who writes this kind of policy anyway?

Bottom line though, it'll all be water under the bridge soon enough and you can focus on all the GOOD stuff that I know will come to you at your new job.

Now for a personal note, when I started reading your post about changing jobs, the very first thing that popped into my head was how it was going to affect ME.  Cause you know...that's how I view everything I guess.  I had this rush of fear that somehow your changing jobs would affect this site and consequently, our forum. I can't tell you how thankful I am that your new venture will not only be a good thing for you but that it will not alter our playground in any way.  So, thank you!

lol..  Everything will remain the same with GulfCommunity.Com.    The new gig is fine with side work so long as it doesn't compete with their biz and so long as it doesn't retract from work.   actually.. this really isn't side work.. since I really just do it  for kicks.  Actually, I think the new biz will be better for GC.    This is my sort of proving ground for exploring new technologies, so that I can take those skills and put them to work for my employer - that shouldn't change for Plugit.   Plus, I think once I get ramped up I will actually be in a situation to work less hours giving me more time to play here.

=)

I had no idea you worked at what we used to laughingly called subStandard Furniture.  But that was back when I was a 20 year old kid.  I worked there for 10 years, one month.  Well, it was one month but seemed like 10 years.

Companies, I find, reflect the attitude(s) of one or more of the top dogs.  In the case of smaller businesses, it is the owner/operator/manager.  In larger operations, it is often the President or the CEO, but seldom both.  The thing I find most striking is how similar the two are.  When it comes to rewarding outstanding achievment or cutting slack for those that cut them slack, most are profoundly petty and stingey to the point of stinking.

Yup... I worked for Standard for 6.5 years.    I started when I was 18.
Regarding my vacation... as the day went on.. the plot thickened....    They came back to say that it wasn't that I was docked for that time, it is that I had not accrued that time.

So, now - let us venture into new math.

If I have 40 hours of vacation, accrued and valid as of Dec 31, wouldn't it stand to reason that at the middle of the year, I would have 20 that was “accrued?“

Apparently not.

SubStandard..  That's pretty funny.     What did you do in your day @ Standard?
Their import products are pretty nice.  I'm too cheap to afford them, however. =)
