Well,  I probably can't come up with 100 reasons alone..

A few years back I had alot of trouble with my gulftel.com email account.   I lost a few customers because gulftel was monkeying with their pop server and lost emails.   Sick of it, I bought a Domain and setup web hosting on a virtual plan with www.interland.com.   I setup my own email domain and administered it through interland's web control panels.   Interland was just about as bad as gulftel.  At this point, my business was in the toilet and I used the email for personal contacts and to trade source code with friends by email. (that's why I didn't just get a yahoo or hotmail account).   So, I had my DSL changed to a static IP and paid the extra $6.00/mo or whatever.   I bought an email server program (Merak, it's real cool, you should try it), got hostname/dns services through www.no-ip.com and I was up and running my own private email server at home.    I wasn't spamming anyone with it or anything..    A year passed by and my computer got infected with one of these mass-email worms.    Dave Majors of Gulftel called, with quite an attitude, ranting that I was running a Mail Server and that was against the user agreement or some crap.  “We'll shut you down.”    What an ASS.   Anyway, it wasn't my mailserver massmailing, it was the stupid worm.   Coincidently, half of their servers got infected with the thing a month later and stayed infected for weeks.   I had my problem resolved in under 30 minutes.  I just think it's crap that I move my email b/c of problems at Gulftel and a general sense they aren't going to do anything then get told I can't run an email server at home.

Hahahaha LOL.

I had a very similar experience.   I called gulf telephone b/c my DSL was freaking out.   I get a call back at work a week later from that same person telling me the problem is that I'm using my DSL too much.  Then the guy asks me what I'm using it for.   I tell him, “File Sharing, Web Surfing, that sort of thing.”    I'm serious, the guy starts yelling at me over the phone telling me that I can't use my DSL for file sharing and blah blah blah.  I thought he was going to stroke out, right there.

I matched his shouts with my own, which I'm a little sorry for doing - “You make the assumption I'm file sharing illegal stuff.    I file share 3d models, graphics files, asp code, tutorials - legal stuff.”

I too, pay for a static.   (Not for long, though.. =) )  Fortunately, I only have a single static so when the price raised, recently - I only paid an extra 10/mo.   My take on the whole thing is - it's okay for them to charge you and supply a static so long as you don't actually use it for anything.

That's too funny.  So, the standing joke is - it's okay to put nude pictures of yourself doing lewd things and host it on your gulftel.com website but don't you dare use your DSL to coordinate projects with others..

True 'nuff.   Well, I'll tell you this.. gulftel isn't all bad... Even though they have restrictions on the DSL - it sure is nice when it works.

Now..  if TotalVision ever starts providing residential DSL in my area, I'm all up in that action.  I've got tons of respects for at least one of the guys I know of that went from Gulftel to TotalVision a few years back.
