My self-imposed March deadline is quickly approaching and everything is shaping up as planned.     One of the issues I've been struggling with is how to raise awareness of the site.   I am personally disgusted by the idea of papering cars in parking lots with flyers and other forms of irritating advertising ploys.   So, I refuse to resort to “gimmick” forms of advertising such as this.

I've contacted companies about Billboards and about slides at local movie theaters.   Neither have resulted in much luck.   Any suggestions that you folks may have to raise community awareness of the site, is greatly appreciated!    Your ultimate acceptance of the site will make or break it's success.. help us to spread the word!

Thanks for visiting!

How about linking to other popular local online sites? All those webcams sites must get a lot of traffic. Write lots of letters to the editor signing your name with website address. get the Pelican to do a feature about online interest in the area, work out a deal with OBChef at Sip and Surf to post some flyers or give her a free stock of pens with the address on it for her customers to use Print little memo pads with the webite logo across the bottom, do online workshops at the libraries that they will promote in their calendars, go around to management companies and see if you can do anything swap promotion, pay school children for every time they sign on to the site to raise the number of hits (which will raise your standing on the search sites), go talk to the snowbird clubs about accessing gulf news online while they are back home, check out the Chamber of Commerce to see if they have meetings that are open to the public where you can schooze and pass out business cards with your site on it. Get a stamp with the address on it and stamp every outgoing piece of mail you have so anyone handling it will see the address, contact every non profit you can find to ask about upcoming events that you will post for free on your events calendar and call them back every month. sponsor a shuffleboard team, go out to the beach everyday and write it in the sand when the tide is out. get the website address printed on tee shirts and make your family wear them everywhere they go. or else

LOL
... but dad... I get beat up when I wear the Pink gc.com shirt to school.  C'mon, let me ride the GulfCommunity.Com Dirtbike to school instead.

There's some good points in there, though - thank you.   I've been thinking about offering gulfcommunity.com email addresses but I need to talk with the webhost before I inundate his mailservers with hundreds of new email accounts. =)

if you are just starting out you most likely don't want to get a billboard.  it can be costly.    put sheets of paper with a synopsis of the site up on area bulletin boards.    it seems like you are targeting clubs - email the leaders of area clubs concerning the site.  get area computer companies to hand out flyers to their customers.
