So let's see if I've got this right.  Greenspan - who is like a century old (and rich) (and to whom social security means nothing anyway) - thinks that the benefits for current retirees should not be touched, but benefits for future retirees should be trimmed and right away.  This will allow all of us future retirees to start planning and adjusting our own finances and savings so we'll be prepared.  What a great idea. (Read with sarcasm, if that's not clear.)  For me, well I've got plenty of time (not!) to completely revamp my entire financial planning, and for all the poor suckers out there still looking for jobs, just as soon as they get one, they can start planning too.

We seem to have a deep and unending well of money for Iraq, but strangely, not enough for retirees.

I would think that all working people should have the right to refuse SS deductions being taken from their earnings . The government has a way of getting out of everyone's pocket what it needs to uphold their pay and retirement but when it comes to us working class we have to fend for ourselves .

If the government would return what money I've put into SS and let me invest it ( or just stash it ) as I see fit I believe  I could have enough to retire now and not have to depend on our fearless leaders to let me have it in small quantities ( or not at all ) when I'm to old to use it .

I 've always thought mandantory retirement should be at age 45 . Then the government should provide us with a salery large enough to support our life style. When we die our heirs would receive whatever is left of our benefits to go toward their retirement ..

On another thought , Can you imagine what would happen if everyone that buys something on a particular day refused to pay taxes on their purchase ? I 'm talking about everything bought in the US on one day  from a pack of chewing gum to the most expensive puchase .
