Mad Scientist's "mad about everything, mad at the world, mad because my name is john, mad because you're name isn't john" blog post inspired me.
Well, that and an ungrateful fruitcake at work. I work at a school now where I am a Datacenter Administrator and Programmer. I like the work, awesome company, great benefits, sweet location, much slower pace than my previous career moves.
I am standing in our Data Center the other day and one of the teachers (a phd who wrongfully thinks that he knows everything, including everything technical but is usually the first to need help) cracks off a wisecrack like , "I think our computer department needs to make use of contractors so we can get things done."
Another sysadmin makes the statement, "Contractors? We have some of the best in the region working here, it would be hard to find people as good as those we currently have to work as contractors."
Mr. Know It All PHD man, retorts with "Best, HA!" and walks away.
Clearly the guy was frustrated about something not working but the Paul Harvey on this one is : the stuff that wasn't working properly was an app we didn't write nor control.
So, this morning I hear Mr. PHD Man squawking about some mundane setting on his workstation and I found myself wanting to disable his user account or set his homepage to a porn site. Does that make me bad? I guess the moral: don't insult the people you ask for help from every day!
